ACTIVITIES:
Dermatology &
Venereology Department of Medical college, Kottayam caters
to the needs of the revenue districts of Kottayam, Idukki,
Pathanamthitta and parts of Ernakulam and Alappuzha.
This is the only tertiary care facility available
in the Government sector in the whole of central Kerala.
MAJOR
ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT:
PATIENT
CARE: O.P. AND I.P.
Department
of Dermatology & Venereology functions as 2 units and
outpatient services are conducted on a daily basis (except
Sundays).An average of 150 new patients per day attend the
OPD and on an average around 30 patients per day receive
I.P. care. Emergency care is provided round the
clock.
The department handled approximately 30,000 O.P.
visits and 666 admissions in 2009.
CONSULTATION
SERVICES: On an average 10
patients per day are referred from other departments in
the hospital for consultation.
ACADEMICS
M.B.B.S.
: 4th
and 6th semester MBBS students undergo 2 weeks and 4 weeks
clinical training respectively in the Department. The curriculum includes lecture classes and
clinical postings. End posting examinations are regularly conducted at
the end of the posting. The students have to make presentations on related
topics using audio-visual aids.
P.G.
TRAINING: The
department imparts training in M.D. (D&V) and DNB
(D&V) courses.
Regular and scheduled activities are conducted for
PG training every day from 8 am to 2 pm. The activities in a week include cameo/seminar/histopathology
slide discussion/STD-Leprosy card review/ Thesis
review/journal club and 2 clinical clubs to discuss
interesting cases. PGs are given individualized supervision and
training in inpatient and outpatient care, ward rounds,
clinical methods, lab procedures, dermatosurgery, cosmetic
procedures and research. Periodic evaluation of the PG candidates is
conducted in the department. PGs from General Medicine and Paediatrics also
undergo specialty training in the department.
Staff
& Post graduates also attend the outreach clinics
conducted by the state health department at remote places
in Kottayam and Idukki districts.
NURSING:
BSc and MSc Nursing and
General Nursing students from the College of Nursing get
trained here. Faculty
members are involved in theory, practical and research
training for the nursing students.
RESEARCH:
The
faculty members and PG trainees are actively involved in
research and dissertation activities. The researches are conducted on various
dermatologic problems.
The
faculty members and PGs regularly present papers at
national, state and district levels. PGs attend training on cosmetologic procedures.
DETAILS
OF CME / CONFERENCES ATTENDED AND CONDUCTED
We
regularly conduct CMEs and conferences. The last one was in 18th April 2010 on
“UPDATES IN DERMATOLOGY”
Dr.
Smitha Ancy Varghese, 2nd year MD trainee,
presented a paper on uncommon presentations of bullous
pemphigoid and got the first prize in the state IADVL
conference at Kannur on May 8th and 9th,
2010. The
quiz team of Dr. Smitha and Dr. Sajani got the second
prize as well.
PUBLICATION
An
article about mucocutaneous leishmaniasis by Prof. Dr.
Sobhana Kumari , Dr. M.I. Celine, Dr.Joy Augustine et al.
was published in the International Journal of Dermatology
April 2010(Volume 49:4)

STD
& LEPROSY CONTROL ACTIVITIES
STD clinic is being conducted every day along with
the OP & we have a STD COUNSELLOR providing counseling
to STD patients, a register is maintained & all the
drugs are provided to the patients free of cost .
We are actively involved in HIV surveillance,
counseling and control activities under the NACO
We have
a LEPROSY OFFICER & all the drugs are provided free of
cost
