Brief History

The Department of Biochemistry at Medical College, Kottayam was set up and nurtured by one of the greatest teachers in Biochemistry - Dr.G Yejnanarayana Iyer,Msc,PhD. Under his able guidance a team of dedicated medical teachers like Dr.Mary Angela Moriera, Dr. K ramachandran and Sri.P>N.K Menon worked sincerely for the advancement of the discipline of Medical Biochemistry in the institution.

Though young in years the department was a center of medical research.Dr. Iyer and his research scholars were able to carry out meaningful research and their papers were published in journals of international reputed. Vasudeva Panicker and Dr.Ramachandran, presently in U.S.A, were the first to be awarded PhD in Biochemistry based on their work under Dr. Iyer in the department.

The clinical biochemistry laboratory which was set up in the hospital under the direct guidance and control of the teaching department soon earned the honour of being the most reputed and reliable clinical chemistry laboratory in Kerala state. The devotion and dedication of Sri. E.K Cherian who gave his whole career to this laboratory was its mainstay until his retirement.

Dr. Iyer's long stint as the Head of the Department ( till 1977 ) provided the solid base on which his followers had only to provide the polishing touch. Dr. K. Ramachandra Panicker succeeded Dr. Iyer.

The department maintained its reputation under the guidance of eminent Professors like Dr. Mary Angela Moreira, Dr. D.M Vasudevan and Dr. Leelamma Varkey. They always encouraged teamwork and appreciated the sincere colleagues to such an extent that for several decades the department of Biochemistry, Medical College, Kottayam was the best in the state of Kerala.

The department was improved much with the sincere and dedicated works by the professors - Dr.Rajan R, Dr.Leela Menon, Dr.Jaya.S, Dr.Gopinathan Nair in the succeeding years. Dr. Sreekumari S, Dr. K.S Rajasekharan Pillai, Dr. Subaida M.R, Dr. Joseph Paul Thyparambil, Dr. Miriam Varkey and Dr. Geetha A.

At present the department is headed by Dr. Pushpalatha .M . Under her guidance, all the staff of the department are actively involved in academic activities as well as clinical laboratory services. The clinical biochemistry laboratory, which is well supervised by Mrs.Jansamma Thomas, Biochemist is one of the best of its kind in our state and by improving and introducing advanced methodologies like metabolic screening programs, endocrinological assays and molecular biology techniques it is striving to achieve the gold standards.
