The
department started functioning since 1964,
Dr. Prof.Balaraman Nair MD as the HOD. Dr
V.K Jayapalan, Dr. B Umadethan, Dr.George
Paul, Dr.C.Radhakrishnan, Dr.Raja ,Dr. B A
Kabeer and Dr. S Girish were our eminent
teachers and HOD's. The department is
situated close to the OP block ,casuality
and the ward. The work in our department
consists of teaching performing medico
legal autopsies and other medico legal
cases, giving evidences in various courts
and giving consultancy service to the
police. The average number of
postmortem/year is around 1500/-.

department is having fairly good number of museum
specimens and other teaching aids photographs, charts,
slides and models required for teaching. The department
has amenties like a well equipped postmortem room,
laboratory good number of library books. From experience
it is seen that kottayam centre gets more number of murder
cases and sensational cases when compared with other
centres in kerala.
