Brief History

The division of nephrology was born in Nov. 1981 to untiring efforts of Prof. R Kasivisweswaran. Peritoneal dialysis was offered to patients from 1975. First hemodialysis was done using Drakewillock machine in 1981 Nov. Renal biopsy was started in July 1981. Prof R Kasivisweswaran was the first Prof & Head of the department till his transfer to medical college Trivandrum. Prof Vimala took over the charge in 1998. Continuous renal replacement therapy was started in 1998, maintenance hemodialysis in 1999 and CAPD also in 1999. Subsequent to transfer of Dr Vimala, Dr K.P. Jayakumar & Dr Usha Samuel continued as Asst Prof & Lecturer. The first renal transplantation was done in 2002. Postgraduate course in Nephrology was started with an annual intake of 1 trainee.
