Brief History

 

Department of Pediatrics, Institute of Child Health, Govt.Medical Kottayam is the only hospital of its kind in Kerala under the Kerala Govt. fully dedicated to the health needs of children. Being situated one kilometer away from the main block of MCH, Kottayam it holds the Pediatric Medicine and Pediatric Surgery departments. This is the major Pediatric hospital in South Central Kerala catering the health needs if children of Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta and areas of Ernakulam and Alappuzha districts of Kerala.

Institute of Child Health was founded on 31/10/1975 ,and inaugurated by then health minister Sri.M.K.Balakrishnan. Early the hospital was functioned at District Hospital, Kottayam. The first HOD was Dr.Elsie Philip (18/10/1971 – 1/4/1977), and Dr.Many Ninan was the First HOD of Pediatric Surgery, and continued the following doctors:-

The hospital give outpatient service of 1.5 – 1.6 lakhs and inpatients strength of 9000 – 10000. Casualty department functioned for 24 hours, residents and Medical Officers. X-ray, ECG and lab facilities are available at OPD timing. Immunization clinics are available at daily. BCG & OPV are available on Tuesday & Friday. DPT & OPV available on Monday & Thursday. In addition to the routine OPD specialty clinics are conducted .

Facilities Available

I.      NEONATOLOGY DIVISION

Neonatology division provide inpatient service to around 2,000 newborn per year.6 bedded Neonatology Intensive Care Unit and 23 baby beds in the ward And we are offering Level III care. Ventilator facility available

Rejenuvated of the newborn ward was inaugurated by Sr.Vasavan.M.L.A

New Intensive Care Unit for the Newborn Babies- was inaugurated by SriThomas Chazhikadan.M.L.A

II.   Valleys Cancer Centre

Valleys Leukemia Care block build by Kochin Cements and Hindustan latex submitted to Kerala Government in the year 2005, and the block was inaugurated by Sri.Ummenchandy the then Chief Minister of Kerala on 29th October 2005.
Implemented Cancer Sureksha Scheme of state government and running effectively from January 2008 onwards.
Free treatment for children below 18 years of age with cancer. At present 36 children are getting treatment from ICH using the scheme. One child will get treatment worth Rs: 50,000

Mental Support programme.conducted ’Unnikala Oru Kathaprayam” -boating at Kumarakom accompanied by their parents and ICH staff in connection with ‘Childrens Day’ celebration of the year 2008.

International Wish Group-Indian chapter visited our children with Leukemia following counseling and has given the gifts according to the wish of the children and there was a get together of children and their parents at Hotel”Windsor Castle” and film star Jayasurya entertained the children with Leukemia on May 20th 2010.

III.   PROGRAMMES IMPLEMENTED

1. Implemented Cancer Sureksha Scheme and running effectively -
2. Implemented – RSBY programme at ICH..
3. Implemented ‘Thalolam” scheme and running effectively. Already 100 patients benefited through this programme.

IV.   AWARENESS CAMPAIGN CONDUCTED FOR THE PUBLIC - 2010

1. Acute Diarrhoeal illness and World ORS Day Celebration.
2. Asthma in Children.
3. Breast Feeding Week Celebration
4. World TB day and RNTCP programme
5. AIDS Control programme
6. Hepatitis-A vaccine campaign.

V.   TRISOMY – 21 ANGELS PROGRAMME

World Down Syndrome Day was celebrated on 26th March 2010 at Institute of Child Health, Medical College, Kottayam. It was a joint venture with IAP Kottayam.

The Programme was inaugurated by Dr.C.Jayakumar, Asso.Prof.of Pediatrics, State IAP President.

Faculties of Jyothis Centre for Cerebral Palsy in Children-shared their experience with family members in Down Syndrome.

Dr.P.Savida, Prof & Head of Pediatrics, Dr.N.Krishnan Namboothiri, Prof.of Pediatrics, Dr.S.Omana and Lyla Chacko, Asso.Professors in Pediatrics took part in the interactive session.

We organized the group of ‘Trisomy Angels’ aiming at provision of better care and follow up of children with Down Syndrome, and the Research programme was inititated, mega vitamin therapy and the Developmental outcome.

26 children with Down Syndrome and their family, PG students, nurses and audience were attended the programme.

VI.   THALASSEMIA CLUB

Thalassemia is a hereditary hematological disorder Hb synthesis. The incidence varies from 3-12% mainly in Sub Himalayan range, Kerala incidence is low. At present 5 children with Thalassemia is getting treatment from ICH. All the children needs frequent Blood transfusion. They need treatment of transfusion related proble, especially Iron overload. If proper treatment and guidance are given they can lead a dignified life.

The children with Thalassemia and other transfusion dependent anaemia. They are getting free treatment using Govt.programme-Thalolam.

We have convinced meeting of the children formed a club-Thalassemia Club on 12/6/2010 at ICH. 9-10 children and their family attended the meeting.

HOSPITAL DAY CELEBRATION

ICH has celebrated “Childrens Day”(as Hospital Day) at every year . In connection with the Day, Painting Competition and Baby Show are conducted for the childrens. Prizes are distributed for the winners.
